Chaos vs Order vs Fish
During the Splatoon 2 World Championship 2019 at E3 this weekend, Nintendo revealed the theme for the final Splatfest for Splatoon 2:
Chaos vs Order
The theme will have players take sides between Pearl and her Chaos team, and Marina and her team of Order, in what the company is calling the “Splatocalypse.” What’s significant about this isn’t so much that it’s the final Splatfest over the 2 year life of the game’s online events, but that it could signal the beginning of a countdown to an eventual Splatoon 3. It will also bring all of the 23 previous Splatfest stages rotate throughout the event, including a new Shifty Station stage.
The final Splatfest of the first Splatoon game on Wii U took place in 2016, and set up the events in between that first game and the sequel. It pitted the musical stars of the game, Callie and Marie, against each other, with Marie winning out. (thanks to Youtuber ChrisD for the video)
The Marie win was given a sort of prequel story in Splatoon 2 and some of the leadup to the game’s release in 2017, just a year after the final Splatfest. Could this mean that Splatoon 3 is well into development, and that the results of Chaos v Order could factor into the plot of the game to be release in 2020? Maaaaaybe. It certainly would be advantageous for Nintendo to release a sequel to one of their most popular franchises on modern gaming.
The Final Splatfest will run for 72 hours when it takes place from 7/18 at 5am PT until 7/21 at 5am PT.
The company also revealed that version 5.0 of the game will be arriving around that same time, bringing special Chaos vs Order gear to the different sides and the ability to play Turf Wars in multiplayer mode with all 24 of the special stages.
