Bungie reveals Destiny 2: Shadowkeep expansion, Free-to-Play version

Self-fulfilling prophecy

An eventful week for Bungie, as the Destiny developer — and now self-publisher — revealed the major next steps for the franchise.

First, the new expansion is titled Shadowkeep. Launching in September, the big piece of DLC will bring an entirely new story to the game, focused on the moon, which might still have wizards on it. Here’s the info straight from Bungie:

New Nightmares have emerged from the shadows of our forgotten Moon. Called forth by haunting visions from her tormented past, Eris Morn has returned and unleashed something that once slumbered beneath the lunar surface – a long dormant power even she cannot control. Return to the Moon. Journey deep into a mysterious enemy citadel. Help Eris slay these nightmares before they reach out beyond the Moon to cast humanity back into an age of darkness.

The base Destiny 2 experience will also be going free-to-play, the company announced. Destiny 2: New Light will bring “foundational modes, activities, and rewards,” allowing new players to jump in and get their footing in the game before diving into the bigger expansions and updates.

Destiny 2 will also shift onto Steam as its home base on PC. This takes place on September 17. On top of that, cross-saves will allow players to access their same info and characters on a variety of different platforms, from PC to Xbox to PS4.

Finally, as noted earlier, the full Destiny 2 experience will arrive on Google’s Stadia this November alongside the launch of the service.
