Back at E3, Microsoft revealed that it was working on streaming a game service. That service is now revealed, and potentially ushers in a new era of gaming.
Streaming services certainly aren’t new (OnLive and Gaikai say hello… and goodbye), but while the concept made it to market years ago, the infrastructure simply wasn’t there to support it. That may be changing soon, as Microsoft joins the growing list of companies looking to hop into that realm. Already featuring Xbox games on a variety of devices, and a download based all-in subscription service as well, the company’s Project xCloud takes the delivery of games to a whole new level.
While still in the early stages, Project xCloud will deliver console and PC quality games to any device, whether a giant rig or a mobile phone, with accurate and high quality visuals, and minimal lag. Built on Microsoft’s Azure, the platform will focusing on scaling and controls — allowing on-screen touch controls, mouse and keyboard, and even a bluetooth paired Xbox One gamepad. Initial tests are taking place now, with a public beta in 2019.
