inXile takes an interesting approach towards drumming up support for the upcoming game.
When we think of crowdfunding, we usually talk about monetary funding or prepurchases of games. inXile’s version focuses on what amounts to social media likes — in Steam. By wishlisting the publisher’s upcoming Bard’s Tale IV: Barrow’s Deep on the Steam marketplace, fans can open up content or even bring the price down for the game when it launches on September 18.
By garnering 100,000 wishlist additions, the game will include Darkest Dungeon‘s torch as an in-game item. Bumping that up to 300k brings the game’s launch price down to $34.95, and at 500k the price further drops to $29.95 and includes a free piece of story DLC, The Haernhold.
The game is already done and on its way to release, but this innovative method of promotion may be more affordable than traditional advertising, while at the same time compelling fans to share the initiative with friends in order to gain something (in this case, cheaper pricing and in-game content).
The Bard’s Tale IV launches on September 18, and the wishlist drive is currently over its 300k stretch goal.
