In a surprise announcement, Resident Evil 7 is coming to the Nintendo Switch.
Well, kind of. And so far only in Japan.
Biohazard 7: Resident Evil Cloud Version is a streaming-only game, requiring a persistent online connection to work. Arriving on May 24 in Japan, the game will be available via a small 45 MB app download, from within which the game will stream utilizing the Ubitas service. The first 15 minutes will be available for free, but then the game will only be available once payment is made. For 2000 yen (or about 18 dollars US), the full game unlocks for 180 days, or 6 months of play time. The payment will include all of the DLC for the game, too.
This is an interesting move, considering that the game is hefty in size and scale. Visual fidelity should come close to the PS4/XB1 versions, but only if the network connection is strong. The similar PlayStation Now is doing okay, we think (?) but the Switch is a different monster.
If you’re interested, the game launches on the Japanese eShop under the “BH7” app title later this week.
