Nintendo Switch Online service to feature cloud saves, access to classic games

Nintendo’s online service has finally been (mostly) detailed.

The service, formally titled Nintendo Switch Online, will allow users to connect online for multiplayer gaming. It’s the company’s version os what Sony, Microsoft and others have already launched, and has been years in the making.

The service will launch in September and run from $3.99/month, to $7.99 for 3 months, to $19.99/year for individuals, or $34.99/year for a family account, which allows up to 8 members of family to connect online. Accounts can be logged into from any device, not just the Switch they call home. Family accounts can be created an linked starting May 15.

Two more big bits of news were revealed. First, while it’s not called Virtual Console any more, Nintendo will be launching a collection of classic games for subscribers. The NES – Nintendo Switch Online (which is a mouthful) will give access to 20 games at launch for as long as users are subscribed. The games will include multiplayer and leaderboards as needed, and many will even allow screen and controller sharing online.

The announced games thus far are:

  • Soccer
  • Tennis
  • Donkey Kong™
  • Mario Bros.™
  • Super Mario Bros.™
  • Balloon Fight™
  • Ice Climber™
  • Dr. Mario™
  • The Legend of Zelda™
  • Super Mario Bros.™ 3

More titles will be revealed later.

Finally, and this is the big one: CLOUD SAVES. No more worrying about your Switch’s memory getting screwed up and losing all of your progress in games. Nintendo already has cloud saves for its mobile titles, so finally FINALLY finally bringing it to consoles has been a long-wanted feature.

Shoop!
