Spyro the Dragon hasn’t exactly been absent lately. Though his last solo game was in 2005, he was the centerpiece of the first Skylanders game back in 2011 and even starred as the feature character of the recent Skylanders TV series on Netflix. Homeboy hasn’t gone anywhere.
But maybe he got a little jealous of Crash Bandicoot.
Announced by Activision, amid what seemed like hourly leaks, Spyro is coming back, getting the same remake treatment that his weird furry buddy (what the hell is a bandicoot anyways) received. Spyro: Reignited Trilogy brings together the first three PlayStation games — Spyro the Dragon, Spyro 2: Ripto’s Rage! and Spyro: Year of the Dragon — onto one disc, but does a heck of a lot more than just up-res them. Developers Toys For Bob have completely remade the games from the ground up, utilizing the originals as a base and layering vastly remade visuals and audio and upgraded controls on top of them.
Upon first glance, it feels like TFB have learned a lot from their work on Skylanders, carrying over some of the style into Spyro’s games proper.
If it’s anything like the Crash remake collection, then we’re in for a pretty great ride. Spyro: Reignited Trilogy arrives this Fall for PS4 and Xbox One.
