In a hotly contested and equally fiery debated category, it was Nintendo’s Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild that took home one of gaming’s biggest awards.
Geoff Keighley’s The Game Awards handed out Game of the Year to Nintendo’s Switch & Wii U masterpiece. It was Nintendo’s first Game of the Year award at the show, after having been nominated in the past. Breath of the Wild also won for Best Game Direction and Best Action/Adventure Game.
The game debuted at the launch of the Switch in March, and has been one of the top selling games of the year. Accepting the award was Eiji Aonuma and Hidemaro Fujibayashi of Nintendo. Zelda beat out Super Mario Odyssey, PUBG, Persona 5 and Horizon: Zero Dawn for the award.
The award caps an incredible year for the company, which launched the Switch to massive success in March.
And, during the announcement of the win, Keighley lightly flubbed ‘Game of the Year” with “Game of the Award,” and so we’re running with it. Forever.
