The more I see of Golf Story, the more my eyes glaze over in happiness.
Sidebar Games’ upcoming sports RPG focuses on old school mechanics and visuals, and uses golf to seemingly solve everything. Golf Story focuses on a narrative first and foremost, but the major point of interaction is through golf (and apparently mowing lawns). Impromptu matches can pop up anywhere across the 8 environments, from lush pixelated greens to dry pixelated deserts to snowy pixelated tundras.
I’m especially intrigued by the added content outside of just golf tournaments. Things like disc golf, driving range challenges, and miniature golf are included to keep things fresh (as fresh as golf can be, obviously).
There are already Mario Golf comparisons, but I’m more apt to think of it as a spiritual successor to Baseball Stars and Bill Laimbeer’s Combat Basketball, with a little Soul Blazer thrown in. Whatever genre mix you can use to describe it, Golf Story could be a novel little game that captivates us.
Expect it this Fall for the Switch.
