Stars, space, science — it’s all the rage right now. From the Expanse to Star Wars, to Aliens to Guardians of the Galaxy, the topics have been mixing together in moving media to great success over the last few years. Star Trek, hot off the excellent and underappreciated Beyond film last year, is making a return to the smallish screen and looks to capitalize on the genres further.
This isn’t traditional Star Trek. Mixing equal parts of The Expanse with Interstellar, Star Trek Discovery is a new show launching this fall on CBS All Access that will precede Kirk, the Enterprise and the latest reboots to set the groundwork for what the original TV series was all about: exploration. With a ship handed to her, The Walking Dead‘s Sonequa Martin-Green will work as a first officer alongside Captains Michelle Yeoh and Jason Isaacs on the Federation ship Discovery as they encounter hostile Klingons and other races, Vulcans, and space perils.
A lot is packed into the first trailer above, but we hope to see more as the Summer rolls in.
