Wonder Boy was the king (prince?) of early platforming video games prior to Mario taking over. The style of the game was distinct, making the Sega Master System often look better than it actually was. Though the history of the game series gets a bit convoluted, one thing is for certain: the modern Wonder Boy III remake looks like it’s on track to best the originals in every way.
For one, the new game is both a remaster and an HD remake of the original. It not only uses updated 8-bit sprites of the legacy games, it also includes hand-drawn revisions in HD, allowing for the switching between the two on the fly. An added bonus lets owners of the Master System game to transfer their saves (via codes) to the new game.
That’s an extra step that DotEmu didn’t have to take, but did so any ways for fan service. We’ll find out how successful it is when the game launches across PS4, Xbox One, PC and Switch on April 18.
