At GDC today, Nintendo’s Satoru Takizawa, one of Breath of the Wild‘s designers, divulged some new information about some of the concepts that led up to the current game.
Aliens. Well, an alien invasion, to be clear. That was one of the early concepts that Takizawa and team explored for the game. Others included Hyrule Wars, which could have ended up leading to an even more unique outcome for what ended up becoming the Switch’s launch title.
Early concepts aren’t uncommon in game development, as the team spoke about the trial and error process of determining what’s right for the series’ next installment. Development went so far as to include plots written out and characters defined for the concepts, including what appears to be an alien on an operating table. What?

Fans have been asking for a futuristic take on Zelda for years, with the latest game taking note and including some technological aspects unseen in the series until now.
Other concepts included a Biker Link, a la his appearance in Mario Kart 8’s DLC, and a rock musician Link.
