#ScreenShotSaturday for February 18, 2017

Whew! It’s been a while! While peeping through Twitter last night I rediscovered the magic that is #ScreenShotSaturday, the weekly sharing of images, gifs and videos from upcoming game development projects.

With GDC and PAX East coming up soon, gamedevs are posting some great images of in-process projects. This week had some good ones, ranging from open world adventures to racing to sidescrolling, many of which we’ll be seeing and hearing more about over the next few weeks.

Sean LeBlanc is working on a project for the #UtopiaJam, a game jam that lasts through to the end of February. It’s a retro-inspired game that brings flashbacks to some of the most engaging indie games of the mid-Eighties.

Ceosol is learning his way through gamedev and posting his journey on social media. His latest screenshot shows an idea he has for a boss battle for a 2D project.

Chris Wingard is working on The Iron Oath, a turn-based tactical RPG. In the image below he shows us some updated moody animations of a battle featuring skeletons, sorcerers and warriors in a dungeon setting.

Russian Subway Dogs looks like a neat arcade style score-gathering game in which stray dogs take the train into Moscow each day in search of food. Featuring special guest dogs from other games and media, the idea could become a quirky guilty pleasure for gamers. Miguel Sternberg has been posting updates.

Helvetii gives me Castlevania vibes, and this latest GIF by one of its developers draws on some 16-bit/32-bit inspiration that makes my gaming mouth water.

Alexander King has been doing some neat prototypes for games, and this week he’s posted a food-dividing concept that feels like a minigame from Warioware. Feed the family!

A new wrestling game?! Pro Wrestling X is in Early Access right now, though it’s been worked on since 2002 in different capacities. It looks to capture some of the more technical aspects of wrestling instead of focusing on a specific brand. The hold shown in the screenshot below gives us the impression of a nicely detailed game.

ANOTHER wrestling game? Time to play the lottery. While PWX is a realistic take on the genre, Wrestling Wrun is the opposite: an endless runner in which wrestlers utilize power moves and grapples as they throw enemies at each other along a giant ring.

I’m a fan of niche racing games, and the next two pique my interest. Racing Apex is low-poly retro racing that has enough of a serious racing DNA beneath it that it could end up being quite competitive.

Mugsters is set in an open map, sort of like a low-poly GTA, where we can hop into and out of vehicles. And launch them into walls, apparently.

Hanako: Honor and Blade is an artful fighter that could end up providing some pretty incredible screenshots in its one-on-one gameplay.
