Nintendo has finally lifted the cover off of its next mobile game.
The second of three Nintendo mobile games launching in roughly a third of a year, Fire Emblem Heroes is a free-to-play game set in the tactical RPG series’ universe and featuring many of its most popular characters. Like the handheld and console iterations of the series, turn-based squad battles make up the core of the gameplay, albeit slightly simplified for a mobile experience. Though the experience takes place on an 8×8 grid now instead of the expansive maps we’ve come to know, the battles are made to be just as engaging, focusing on the individual characters, their strengths and weaknesses, and special skills. The characters can be also leveled-up, a mainstay of the series.
Designed for mobile platforms, Heroes will focus on taps, drags and swipes to control characters in battles, and will include regular content updates to keep players involved. With Fire Emblem, the joy isn’t so much in completing specific story elements as it is in collecting teammates and improving them, which will carry over and perhaps become an addictive feature of the new game.
Fire Emblem Heroes launches February 2 for Android and iOS.
