In a press release this morning, Niantic — developer of the mega hit mobile game Pokémon GO — revealed that a substantial update will be taking place for the app.
While no definitive number of Pokémon was specified, recent rumors and rumblings have suggested that Generation 2 of the pocket monsters will be the focus, adding nearly 100 more to the roster. Though the game launched to mega status in the Summer and quickly became the biggest app of all time, it began fading away as kids started going back to school and lack of updates led to less return players. More to collect should mean more to do, and could bring about another bump of users perfectly during the holiday season and vacations. More monsters to collect and events to take on will be revealed on December 12, and the update should theoretically take place soon after.
Niantic also stated that in partnership with Sprint it will include more than 10,500 new Pokestops and gyms at the mobile provider’s stores and kiosks, along with the ability to charge the device for GO players.
With Super Mario Run launching later next week, Nintendo’s mobile efforts could have a big impact over the December holiday season this year.
