It’s been almost 15 years since the last single player focused MechWarrior game graced the world. MechWarrior 4 is still highly beloved, and fans have kept the passion for that game through the various iterations that the series has taken since then, including with MechWarrior Online. Multiplayer seemed to be the right direction for the IP over these last several years, and players have eaten it up.
But there was always something missing, something gnawing at the back of our heads. We still wanted a proper, traditional MechWarrior game.
Developers Piranha Games have heard the call, and at today’s MechCon — an event aimed at the history and legacy of MechWarrior and BattleTech — they formally announced MechWarrior 5: Mercernaries was in production.
Though still early, and targeting 2018 for a release date, the game will put players in control of a rookie pilot at the start of their career, carrying out missions for their faction and building up their reputation. It seems like pure MW, and the pre Alpha-based trailer leads us to believe that the series has some life yet left in its classic bones.
Err, I mean gears. Mechs. Armor. Whatever.
