Hot off of the popularity of the appearance on the NES Mini, classic series Double Dragon is back for a new game. “New-ish” is probably a better way to describe it.
Arc System Works, who acquired the Double Dragon IP last year after it bounced around when original publisher Technos went bankrupt, have announced that the next game is finally on its way. Double Dragon IV is the direct sequel to Double Dragon II, one of the most popular brawlers on the NES and in arcades of the 1980s. This is where a bit of confusion comes in. Though this is the direct sequel to DD2, this skips over the events of Double Dragon 3. Super Double Dragon was released on the SNES in 1992 and served as the 4th game in the series, and a fifth game, Double Dragon V, was released in 1994 on SNES & Genesis as a tournament fighter a la Street Fighter II. Then, a few remakes were created before Double Dragon Neon (developed by WayForward) was released for consoles in 2012.
Whew.
The new Double Dragon IV reverts to the 8-bit visual style of Double Dragon II and arrives on PS4 and PC on January 30, 2017 just in time for the 30th anniversary of Double Dragon.
