I wasn’t a Pokémon kid back in the day. I had just started college, or thereabouts, and was waning on my Gameboy usage. I just didn’t have the time to play anything other than one console (which ended up being the N64 for a couple of years).
That said, I saw the phenomenon blow up around me, especially among young kids. I saw card tournaments pop up around me, kids meeting at the mall to trade in-game monsters, and the cartoon… oh man, that cartoon was everywhere.
Fast forward to a couple of decades later, and (even though I’ve dabbled with the games) I still haven’t succumbed to the IP. After watching this fan-made video, I feel that this is what I *could* have been like had I been involved more. I’ve certainly seen it among my younger friends, who are now breaking out their incredible collections of classic cards and still playing Pokémon GO on a regular basis. With Pokémon Sun & Moon arriving in just a few weeks I imagine this is what is going to happen to a lot more people this Fall.
Great job to John Wikstrom for putting this together, and reminding us that it’s okay to be a kid for our entire lives.
