Earlier today at its PlayStation Meeting in New York, Sony’s Andrew House and Mark Cerny took the stage to reveal the PlayStation 4 Pro, it’s upgraded game console based on the Playstation 4 platform.
The PS4 Pro is sort of an enhanced Playstation 4, remaining a part of this generation instead of ringing in a new one. It will play all of the games that the current PS4 has, as well as work with the PlayStation VR. The device will incorporate 4K and HDR gaming, utilizing more than double the GPU of the PS4 and based off of the AMD Polaris. It will also boost the clockrate of the CPU.
True to its name, the Pro arrives with a pro-sized hard drive, measuring in at 1TB and making it easy to transfer over anyone’s OG PS4 data.
The new console is built around the concept of “forward compatibility,” which is described as allowing all of the past and current PS4 games to get a bump in graphical fidelity within the new console. That is, depending on whether a game’s developer chooses to do so. Shown off at the press event were improvements for Shadow of Mordor and Infamous: First Light, among others.
The console is designed to be attached to a 4K TV for maximum benefit, though if gamers don’t own one, then Pro will output its games in a native 1080p to existing sets.
Sadly, the console will not allow for the use of UHD Blu Ray discs, so anyone who wants to fully experience 4K video will have to do so through streaming services. I hope your ISP has enough bandwidth.
The biggest surprise wasn’t the specs, but the release date. The PS4 Pro launches this November 1oth for $399, or the cost of the original PS4 when it debuted in 2013.
