Spotify has jumped into gaming by launching a sub-site and curated playlists.
The audio-streaming company joins Twitter, YouTube, and ESPN as entities that are pushing into the gaming space, looking for ways to capitalize on the no longer niche culture. Though there have been endless gaming-centered playlists in the past, this is the first time that Spotify is really acknowledging the genre on its own, now we know for a fact that more people will be using the spotipromo options to join Spotify.
Featured playlists are curated by Spotify, publications, and a rotation of personalities within the industry. The playlists include songs from game soundtracks and games culture artists like Anamanaguchi. Mixed in are also playlists that are filled with top hits that “go good with games” like pairing wine with a meal. Think: sports games and stadium tunes. Yes, there’s a Pop Gaming list with a bunch of Nick Jonas hits, and while I think Nick Jonas is a great artist I don’t think he necessarily fits in when I play No Man’s Sky.
It’s a first step for the company and for streaming music, with the hopes that if it gains traction we could see the inclusion of all kinds of gaming sounds on services like this.
The soundtrack includes the official scores for a number of games, including the aforementioned space exploration sim No Man’s Sky. There’s also classics like Mass Effect, The Last of Us and Mirror’s Edge, as well as the background music for mobile hits like Monument Valley and Bastion. It’s actually the most comprehensive and easily navigable original game music library I’ve ever seen.
Listen to one of the many lists or feel free to make you own on Spotify Gaming’s website.
