There’s a new PlayStation 4 in town, and it’s Slim.
Well, there *will* be a new PS4, as Sony is set to announce something at an event in New York on September 7th. Most of the speculation has been around the mythical more powerful PlayStation 4 NEO, but it looks like the company is set to introduce a more affordable, slimmer OG version.
The PS4 “Slim” (our nickname) first appeared on British auction site Gumtree, and was noticed by members of gaming forum neoGAF. The device was subsequently purchased by Twitter user shortmaneighty2, who posted more photos online and was paid a visit by UK gaming website Eurogamer for further verification. According to all parties, this is the real deal.
Apparently, the console isn’t even supposed to launch until September 14, so arriving three weeks early is a bit suspect. No matter; Eurogamer took a good long look at the device and confirmed its validity. The specs are as follows:
- Model CUH-2016A
- Definitely smaller & thinner
- 500GB HDD, with no visible way to upgrade
- Removal of the digital audio output
- HDMI, Camera, Ethernet, Power and dual USB ports remain
- New physical Power & Eject buttons, as opposed to the current PS4’s capacitive ones
- Matte surface, instead of glossy
- New DualShock 4 controller with a light bar on top as well as front
No word on pricing, though this will more than likely be a lower-priced model compared to the current PS4, since the components have been minimized and manufacturing improved. We’ll find out more in September!
