Sony announced Resident Evil VII at their E3 Press Conference. If the trailer is any indication, Capcom’s franchise has returned to its roots, casting off explosive set pieces in favor of pure, atmospheric terror. The game seems to be tangentially related to Kitchen, an infamous Playstation VR horror demo. This new approach to horror may be precisely what’s needed to rejuvenate the survival horror franchise.
Resident Evil VII will be available on Playstation 4 with a full VR experience, and it will also be released on Xbox One, Windows 10, and Steam on January 24, 2017. Tonight, Playstation Plus members will have access to a playable demo.
UPDATE: It seems that Resident Evil VII will take place within the original universe. According to Capcom’s blog, the latest game will take place after the events of Resident Evil 6, and players will explore a decrepit house somewhere in rural America. Though no Spencer Mansion, this new setting pays homage to the franchise’s origin.
