Trey Parker and Matt Stone know how to make a video game. South Park: The Stick of Truth was a fantastic RPG that ended up being one of the best games of the last console generation. With the upcoming sequel, The Fractured But Whole, the duo looks to top the original in every way.
The premise behind the latest South Park game is fairly simple: just as soon as The Stick of Truth‘s saga ends, the new kid (aka, we the “gamer”) is back to being nothing. Cartman and the rest of the South Park juvenile delinquents have decided to create their own comic book cinematic universe, and a disagreement about the direction splits the group in two.
This is where the player comes in, taking on the same role as the new kid and playing the sides against each other. In a plot reminiscent of Marvel’s Captain America: Civil War film, the split sides of heroes and villains face off against each other for total domination.
The sequel will also improve upon the original’s turn-based combat, allowing players to move around on a grid during battles, attacking from behind or the side of enemies, and even knocking enemies into obstacles or other characters for added damage.
Though it was announced last year, the game seems to take a lot of inspiration from this past season of South Park, with locales like SoDoSoPa and characters like PC Principal.
South Park: The Fractured But Whole launches on December 6 of this year, and will come with a copy of the original Stick of Truth for download on PC, PS4 and Xbox One. Several collector’s editions of the game will be available, including ones with Towlie and a season pass for downloadable content.
