While Burt Lancaster isn’t behind this Scorpio, Microsoft believes developers will be. Announced at E3 2016, after several leaks over the past few weeks, the company formally announced that it was working on the mega console.
In a video featuring developers from within Microsoft and the rest of the industry, the needs for an ultra-powerful gaming device were thoroughly explained. If this sounds familiar, it’s because just three years ago we were given very similar messaging about the Xbox One.
The console cycles are moving faster than ever now, as hardware makers move closer to a general consumer product lifecycle.
Project Scorpio (internal development name) will feature a 6 Teraflops GPU, an 8-core CPU, and 320GB/s bandwidth. This will give true 4K console gaming and a consistent 60fps of visuals. The console will be VR-ready as well, and Fallout 4 VR was featured in the announcement.
Project Scorpio will launch in Holiday 2017, and was noted to be a part of the “Xbox One family” of consoles, meaning that going forward all games will be playable across generations.
We don’t know anything else about Scorpio: no price, no visual design, controls, etc. Just that it’s supposedly powerful and coming next year. With the Nintendo NX, Xbox Scorpio, and the rumored PS4 Neo, it looks like 2017 just got a whole lot more crowded.
