Another May, another Call of Duty reveal. While Infinite Warfare was leaked over the past week through retailer ads, tweets and digital storefronts, Activision made it official today with the full announcement of the game.
Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare is Infinity Ward’s return to the series in the new 3-studio rotation, following Treyarch with last year’s Black Ops III and Sledgehammer Games’ Advanced Warfare in 2014. As the series has been pushing more and more into the near future, Infinite Warfare goes further forward in time than ever before, with humans populating other reaches of the galaxy. In the cinematic and gameplay of the trailer, Earth is met with a surprise attack from another force, decimating cities and forcing the hand of those who wish to protect the planet.
This iteration promises to push narrative as a key aspect of the game, putting players in the shoes of a ship captain as they work through blockbuster set pieces and lots (and lots) of explosions. Granted, this time there will be space battles, which should add more variety to the mix. The trailer even showed female soldiers, something that the series had been criticized for in the past.
If past Call of Duty games have told us anything it’s that Multiplayer is king, and Infinite Warfare will continue that tradition with all of the series’ bells and whistles, while now also adding a narrative to the Zombies co-op mode.
The company also announced that a remaster of the OG Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare will be included in many of the premium versions of the package, allowing gamers to try out one of the most pivotal experiences in the FPS genre. Only 10 of the most popular maps will be included on the multiplayer side, but it’s a nice bonus regardless.
Infinite Warfare has my interest piqued, as the series has been showing some age in its near future time period stagnancy over the last few iterations. Perhaps pushing the limits to a Mass Effect level will be the much needed jolt of creative life that the games need.
Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare arrives for PS4, Xbox One and PC this Fall. Yup, no PS3 & Xbox 360 release — old gen is officially dead.
