I love games influenced heavily by art and style. In the argument of “can games be art,” sometimes focusing on the beauty can prove that answer to be a firm “yes.” GoNNER, the third game from publisher Raw Fury, aims to emphasize that point, featuring an aesthetic that draws us in and punches our face with contrast and color, sketch lines and art school energy.
Its poppy visuals are unavoidable, using a modern flash/cutout design language defined by the use of color. Think: Limbo, but with more visual variety.
The main character, Ilk, must travel deep into a perilous world and find the best trinket to cheer up his whale-like friend Sally. The game is a procedurally generated 2D platformer, featuring action and puzzles in the vein of Super Meat Boy and the mood and adventure of Don’t Starve. Developed by studio Art in Heart, it features the talents of designers Ditto and Martin Kvale and composer Joar Renolen.
There is no release date set for the game yet, but I hope it’s soon — artful experiences are a blessing on computer screens.
