Oops!
Sometimes, someone at a company will accidentally flip a switch that wasn’t supposed to go live. That happened this week as someone at ILM (Industrial Light & Magic, the long-time CGI masters of the film industry) inadvertently posted the following Star Wars-related video to their ILMxLab web page.
Star Wars: Trials on Tatooine is being billed as a “cinematic virtual reality experiment”. It’s not necessarily a game yet — and frankly, it looks a little rough around the edges — but it could very well lead in to some very neat things for Lucasfilm fans as the modern era of the films take hold. The video was quickly pulled, but not before intrepid fans were able to snag it. GDC is this week, so we may hear more then. The “experiment” is being developed for the HTC Vive and shows scenes of first-person lightsaber combat. And R2-D2!
In some more realistic news, Sony revealed during its Playstation VR press tour that an exclusive VR version of the recently released Star Wars Battlefront is in the works for their own VR device. What that version is or when it’ll actually be released is a mystery, but EA and Sony have been on great terms lately, so the exclusivity isn’t out of the ordinary. We may see more about that at E3 or Gamescom later this year.
