Telltale bringing classic-feeling Batman adventure game into 2016

At last night’s Game Awards, Telltale Games revealed that they would be tackling Batman as their next license. Well, if you can tackle a Batman, that is.

During a short, black and white teaser trailer, we’re given vignettes of Gotham descending into chaos and the need for someone to “take back the night.” Mentioned along side the growing threat are snippets of Bruce Wayne’s playboy lifestyle, as one image shows him with women draped on his arms.

We don’t know much about Batman: A Telltale Game Series, but we can probably infer a lot from the style and substance teaser. For one, it has the feel of Batman: The Animated Series, mixed with some of the comic book’s original themes. By going black and white — at least in the trailer — we get the sense of noir film, meaning that perhaps we’ll have more detective work being done rather than just the action of modern games and film. That brings Batman back to his roots (DC stands for “Detective Comics”, after all), and echoes the early nineties cartoon, which itself was a call back to the character’s origins and early seventies return to grimness with Dennis O’Neil and Neal Adams at the helm of the books.

This could also mean that we get more time as Bruce Wayne than in the Warner Bros Arkham games, and really emphasize the narrative elements of the series. This is furthered by Telltale’s press release about the game:

“This iteration of Batman will give fans a first-hand opportunity to dive deeper into the complex life and mind of Bruce Wayne, the duality of his own identity, and the struggle of responsibility in saving a city overcome with corruption and villainy.”

This isn’t the first time that Telltale has worked with DC Comics, as the companies collaborated on the Wolf Among Us series in 2013.

Batman: A Telltale Series is due to launch in 2016.
