We’ve been wondering when Nintendo would announce its successor to Club Nintendo, and now it finally has. Welcome “Nintendo Account”! Welcome “My Nintendo”!
The service will be an all-in-one account system, something that users have been begging for, connecting users to the company’s hardware, as well as to PC and mobile devices. As a bonus, it will allow transferring of data (saved games, characters!) between devices through a cloud-based network. That includes mobile to console and vice versa.
My Nintendo will also bring back points and bonuses for game owners. Once a game is purchased, the owner will get said game tagged to their account, giving them points for purchases. Points will also be accumulated as the game is played more, hopefully ensuring that owners retain the purchased software. Points can be used towards digital goods like DLC or in-game items, physical goods, and coupons.
What’s maybe more intriguing is the other part of the service’s benefits. By presenting the membership at theaters, amusement parks and other businesses, added perks are obtained. This is similar to something like what Disney does with its rewards programs in the US, or automobile company Lincoln’s Black Label — a sort of premium experience that only members can attain.
Joining the membership service is done through something called “Nintendo Account”, allowing users to log in/join using Twitter, Google, Facebook, email, or their existing Nintendo Network ID.
The service looks like it will launch in March 2016.
We’ll have more as the company reveals more.
