During its Corporate Management Policy Briefing slash Second Quarter Financial Results Briefing today, Nintendo finally took the wraps off of its first mobile game with partner DeNA. But first it delayed it into 2016.
Stating that the game is now aiming for a March 2016 release (via the Wall Street Journal’s liveblog of the event and subsequent Nintendo presentation file), “Miitomo” will be a sort of passive social network experience. It’s not a game, though; it’s more like Tomodachi Life for phones. Much like on the company’s hardware, users create Miis in the Free-to-Play app, with the ability to purchase clothing, decoration and more. Using wireless tech, the Miis will meet and converse as the owners pass others with the app. It’s a technology akin to Streetpass for smartphones.
As more information is shared by the users via in-app questions and tasks, characters meet and “chat” unbeknownst to their owners, potentially revealing sides of the users that are often hidden.
This isn’t the first time software has let characters go off on their own only to come back later with some kind of growth (think: MMOs or many Role Playing Games), but its definitely done in a Nintendo kind of way.
We’ll have more on the game as it nears release, as Nintendo hopes to heavily promote it post-Holidays (prompting the delay).
