Friday nights in the Summer were almost always reserved for my gaggle of friends and I gathering to play Cards Against Humanity, Divorce: The Game, or Super Smash Bros, coupled with our beverages of choice. It would almost always result in laughing to the point of tears, and someone running onto the lawn after hyperventilating.
Ah, good times. Good times.
I’m always looking for the next party game to get into rotation, though. I’ve essentially run out of cards to play against all the humanity. Yay for good timing, because here comes Devil’s Advocate!
Card games are good when they’re extremely easy to learn to play, and they’re great when they get us to be creative. But, more than anything, they’re AMAZING when they explore personal biases. Like, I love hearing how horrible my friends can actually be. It’s thrilling to be able to hold something over them like a black cloud of shame. Devil’s Advocate looks like it’s all of those things.
The game asks one player to read a statement on a card while the others debate on the pros and cons. At the end of a set time, players “Agree” or “Disagree” with it, and those that match the reader’s position get points. One person can get a point, or everyone, or no one, relinquishing the winner-take-all feel of other games. That’s it! Simple. The strategy behind the game is two-fold: make a strong enough point for one side or another, and figure out how the reader will react. And, depending on who’s playing, it could be possible for readers to change their position each time they play based on the debate from others.
Devil’s Advocate is up on Kickstarter right now, with a bunch of different reward tiers, and has already beaten its $10k goal. It’s expected to ship in December.
Disclosure: We’ve covered projects by Len Kendall in the past, and I’ve contributed to the CentUp campaign that he was a part of.
