The feathers fly in the first Angry Birds movie trailer

The Angry Birds franchise was the first to define mobile gaming in this new era. It’s been hugely successful, spawning sequels, spin-offs and TV shows. In fact the first true sequel, Angry Birds 2, debuted just this past Summer, more than 5 years after the original. But not all is well at the game’s developer Rovio. Profits are sinking and layoffs have begun, and flinging birds has been surpassed by crushing candy and clashing clans.

The upcoming Angry Birds Movie faces two big challenges: save and revitalize Angry Birds, and be one of the only movies based on video games to not only do well at box offices but actually be enjoyable. It’s heavily geared towards kids, much like the brand that spawned it has become, but it may face tough competition from a Summer packed with Disney, Marvel and DC Comics movies. The Angry Birds Movie hits theaters in 2016.

Frankly, I still think the Angry Birds peace treaty would have been a better plot line to go after.
