It’s been a difficult week at Nintendo for its employees and fans. Satoru Iwata’s passing was unexpected and terrible, and left many in the games industry in shock at the loss. But he’s not gone forever, and thanks to the wonderful side of the Internet he may yet be eternal.
Many of us had heard about the famous “Heart of a Gamer” speech that Iwata-san did at GDC in 2005 — in which he said that he may be a corporate President on his business card and a game developer in his mind, but he’ll always be a gamer in his heart — but few have actually seen it. Thankfully this week, in honor of his passing and in his remembrance, the fine folks behind the GDC conferences have posted the keynote speech in full, all 60 minutes of it, onto YouTube, along with many of his other speeches and keynotes at the event.
Have a watch below to understand why Iwata was so cherished as being more than just a President. He wasn’t developing games for us, he was us.
