“I’m the Doctor, and I save people.”
When we last left the Doctor, he had gone through perhaps his most trying regeneration yet. Once an adventurous, caring youth, the Doc was older and more cynical. He treated humans as a nuisance, panic as anomalies, and exhibited general malaise for his own existence. Quite frankly, he didn’t know where he fit into the grand scheme of the universe.
The end of last season changed that. The Doctor met Missy (the Master’s new form) and saw Clara’s heartbreaking loss of Danny. He saw Earth come to a standstill as people dealt with the deaths of loved ones all over again. He saw the consequences of his lack of caring, and what that did to the world around him. Perhaps, then, that was his real regeneration.
Well, the Doctor is back for Series 9, and the debut season trailer coming out of SDCC is one that left my mouth open in awe. The Capaldi’s Twelfth incarnation of the character is now looking for adventure, exploration, information and companionship. We see action, we see fear, we see enemies old and new, and we even get the return of Missy.
And that last scene, featuring Maisie Williams as someone (we don’t know yet) from the Doctor’s past? Goosebumps.
Cannot wait. The hype is real. Let’s hope it can deliver.
