What happens when you give professional artists some free time, art equipment and a costume holiday? You get this.
My friend Jessica Nestorovski (Jess_Nestro) was heading out to a Halloween party and opted to put her art skills to use in developing her costume. A fellow lover of geekery and pop culture, she settled on being a White Walker from HBO’s (and George RR Martin’s) Game of Thrones.
Jess, who’s a Graphic Designer by day and Media & Communication Arts graduate, spent nearly three hours this past Friday applying professional-grade face paints and skin effects, as well as modifying clothing, to get the look of an undead fantasy zombie from medieval-ish times. The wrinkles and tainted skin were done with just a few shades of black, white and gray, and the drying skin on her hands was layered for an extra undead look.
The shadows around the eye sockets especially help her (Photoshopped) glowing blue eyes pop out more. Great costume & makeup work isn’t always about going into painstaking minute details, but rather designing for the occasion. Knowing that she’d be attending a party at a local club where the lighting wasn’t blazing, Jess focused more on the quantity and placement of things instead of the tiny details. She won first place, by the way.
For reference, here’s what the White Walker looks like on HBO’s hit show:
