Just over a month ago we found out about Nintendo launching the New 3DS, complete with removable face plates and system menu themes. Now, while we don’t have the new hardware yet, we can at least welcome the digital side of that news.
With the latest operating system update, 9.0.0-20, launching last night, users can purchase and download several themes to their portable device. Available at launch are 15 themes to purchase and 5 pre-installed, though the installed are just basic color themes — red, blue, pink, black, green. The themes range in price from $0.99 to $1.99, and from star patterns to animated (classic 8-bit Mario!).
The themes are accessed from a new button at the top left of the home menu screen, which links to a special eShop Theme Shop section within. It’s not difficult to imagine themes on the 3DS coming at a quick pace, especially when we are reminded of all of the classic NES games and characters, and anything even remotely linked to Super Smash Bros. With themes also recently arriving to the PS Vita, handhelds are becoming much more personalized. Granted, I just wish that we can someday create our own themes for our 3DSes and share with friends.
Anyhoo, I snagged the Legend of Zelda theme (see above) which alters the background and adds a treasure-chest appearance to the icons and folders.
Also coming in the update: the ability to much more easily take our screen captures and share them with friends, as the 3DS Image Share feature now allows for all manner of sharing. I’ve been sending out strange Smash Bros images, myself.
