I was a huge fan of Spawn in the Nineties. Todd McFarlane — along with Jim Lee, Whilce Portacio, Erik Larsen and others — redefined comic books at a time when they were just beginning to return to cultural influence (for the 3rd time). Spawn was at the forefront, with a mature storyline, incredible character development, and a rich world.
When the Nineties began to birth comic and video game movies (Mortal Kombat, the original Punisher, and an OG Captain America?!) Spawn was greenlit. The film had dazzling effects amid a fairly meh plot, though fans enjoyed it because it was Spawn. Michael Jai White did an interesting job of bringing the character to life…. or wait, wouldn’t that be death? I could never tell if Spawn was still in Limbo or not.
Fans of the character will want to check out the above short film directed by fan Michael Paris. It’s modern, gritty, and works incredibly well as a tease at what could be. It’s JUST a fan film; it’s not a pitch, unlike the Mortal Kombat fan film that ended up becoming a live action mini series on YouTube.
Anyhoo, check it out above, and then watch the Spawn animated series, which was maybe the best version of Spawn across any medium.
