Marvel is having a huge year. After announcing five upcoming dates late last week, they swooped in and grabbed a sixth date (May 4, 2018). This gives us their schedule through 2019, not including what they have coming up in 2015 & 2016.
At SDCC they shared a bit of info on some of those films.
Avengers 2: Age of Ultron
First up is Avengers 2: Age of Ultron. See: the incredible poster above. The film takes place in the aftermath of the excellent Captain America: Winter Soldier, in which SHIELD has been destroyed. Tony Stark creates the robot Ultron as a way to help maintain peace in the world, but the robot soon runs amok. The Ultron character is one that has drifted in and out of Marvel series over the years. He’s the main nemesis for the heroes in the film and is voiced by James Spader. Joining the cast will be new heroes as well. Android character Vision will be played by Paul Bettany. Godzilla co-actors Aaron Taylor-Thompson and Elizabeth Olsen will play Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch, respectively. The two characters appeared in a post-credits scene in Winter Soldier, for those that stuck around for them.
The crowd at SDCC was able to witness some amazing footage for the movie, including Iron Man in the Hulkbuster armor (an outift the size of the Hulk and designed to take him down) and a climactic scene in which the heroes lay defeated at his feet. The movie releases May 1, 2015, and this footage will probably make it online soon.
Ant-Man
We finally have information about Ant-Man! First and fore-most, the movie arrives next year, July 17, 2015. It’ll branch out from Avengers 2 in undisclosed ways, and feature the origin story of the tiniest of Avengers.
Paul Rudd plays Scott Lang (Ant-Man), and Michael Douglas play’s Hank Pym, the creator of the shrinking technology and original Ant-Man in the comics — though it’s speculated that Pym will be mentoring Lang to take over the mantle in the film. Evangeline Lilly plays Pym’s daughter, Hope, and the love interested of Lang because this is a movie and romance seems to always be required. Finally, Corey Stoll will take the helm of the main antagonist, Yellow Jacket.
Thanos
We first saw Thanos at the very end of Avengers, after the credits, and hasn’t appeared since then. He’s a character that many consider the ultimate bad guy in the Marvel universe, tied in his eternal quest to obtain the Infinity Gauntlet, of which we got our first glimpse of already in Odin’s trophy room in Thor. He was the reason that Loki attacked Earth in Avengers, and makes an appearance in Guardians of the Galaxy. We assume we’ll see him in some capacity in Avengers 2, as well. He’s the overall enemy that ties the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe together.
Now we have an actor announced to take on the role: Josh Brolin. Good luck, Josh. The role is bigger than Lex Luthor.
Guardians of the Galaxy 2
Guardians of the Galaxy hasn’t even been released yet (it arrives in theaters this coming week) and the sequel has already been announced: July 28, 2017. The film is getting epic reviews, and should be the big hit of the Summer. I guess all that hype is paying off?
