The mid-nineties can be considered the first real renaissance of sports video games. One of the first I fell in love with was the original FIFA game, FIFA International Soccer. It was the first sports game to come out on everything, from the SNES and Genesis to PC to Gameboy. It launched just after the World Cup in the US, with soccer riding the first of its many “will it finally catch on in America?” waves.
Much like Aladdin before it, everyone had their favorite version. Though the SNES had fewer teams than its rival the Genesis, it did have moreĀ fromĀ the World Cup that year. I preferred it simply because of the superior SNES controller, which I used as my weaponry during the Great Console War.
Anyhoo, watch the clip below and enjoy the isometric glory of the world’s sport, and cheer on your respective team in the final few rounds of the actual event.
