X-Men fans have long criticized the run of X-Men films for their lack of the fan-favorite, Cajun card-throwing mutant Gambit. Sure, he showed up in 2009’s X-Men Origins: Wolverine, but the general sentiment is that’s something everyone would rather forget altogether.
The wait for a proper Gambit appearance may be coming sooner rather than later, though, as X-Men producer Lauren Schuler Donner confirmed in a red carpet interview with Total Film that not only did they plan to bring the character to the big screen, but that they had already settled on actor Channing Tatum for the role.
Tatum has been rather outspoken about his interest in playing Gambit for quite some time now, even stating in a recent MTV interview that he “would die” for the role, due to his long love for the character.
It’s sure to be quite some time until we actually see anything come of this development however. The most recent film, X-Men: Days of Future Past isn’t even slated to release until May 23 in the US, and no future projects have been officially revealed yet. San Diego Comic Con isn’t far away, though. If there were ever a place to make a new X-Men announcement, that’d certainly be the place.
