During a special broadcast today, the BBC has named its new Doctor Who, and it’s Peter Capaldi!
Zoe Ball hosted the special, which filmed in front of a live studio audience and featured special guests including Matt Smith, Peter Davidson (the Fifth Doctor) and Steven Moffat. We reported on Capaldi potentially winning the role earlier this week.
Though this is the 12th Doctor Who, many might want to remember that John Hurt was revealed as a “non-Doctor” in between Doctors number 8 & 9, or Paul McGann and Christopher Eccleston.
Matt Smith talked about his time in the TARDIS, stating that “When you gotta go, you gotta go.” He spoke about the backlash when he was cast at age 26, with many feeling he was too young for the role. His Doctor focused on a more physical comedy, and his audition even included him wearing a tweed jacket and bow tie, which we all know became his sort of character costume throughout the show. “It’ll be hard to top,” said Smith of the job, noting that the 50th is the perfect time to step away.
Steven Moffat explained how he’ll miss Matt Smith’s ability to be brilliantly chaotic, inventing the role as he went along. Moffat had “an idea” about who the 12th would be, invited him over to his home to record a quick video of the actor to show around.
A huge cast of celebrities chimed in on their favorite doctors and moments, including past Doctors, companions and even Stephen Hawking. This caps rumors that began since Matt Smith announced his “retirement” from the roll back in June. Smith offered a few words of wisdom to Capaldi, wishing him good luck in ruling the universe.
We’ll have our reactions on a special recording of The Lonely Tardis tomorrow night. Let us know your comments below and we’ll read them on air!
