Today, CCP, the developers of the uber-complicated MMO, EVE Online, showed off some of the new features coming to its other game, Dust 514. The preview happened during their latest EVE Fanfest event in Reykjavik, Iceland. It would have been difficult to keep track of everything happening in their public stream and write a full article at the same time, so instead I decided to tweet about it.
These are those tweets
Dust 514 will be receiving its latest update, Uprising, on May 6.
EVE Online stream is already talking about alcohol because of course they are.

EVE Fanfest stream chat is just people saying “beer” over and over again.
— Steven Strom (@stevenstrom) April 25, 2013
EVE fanfest stream chat has no gotten decidedly sexist after one of the players brought out on stage was, shockingly, a girl.
— Steven Strom (@stevenstrom) April 25, 2013
Dust 514 update is supposed to make the game easier to get into. Makes sense.
— Steven Strom (@stevenstrom) April 25, 2013
New suits, gear, guns, etc. coming to Dust 514.
— Steven Strom (@stevenstrom) April 25, 2013
Stream chat has now started name calling for racism against fake in-game races.
— Steven Strom (@stevenstrom) April 25, 2013
More Dust stuff: New vehicles, new racially-based equipment.
— Steven Strom (@stevenstrom) April 25, 2013
Game is getting rid of real-money-based, consumable voice chat items.
— Steven Strom (@stevenstrom) April 25, 2013
Voice chat across both EVE Online and Dust 514 is now free.
— Steven Strom (@stevenstrom) April 25, 2013
CCP is now pimping improved character creation.
— Steven Strom (@stevenstrom) April 25, 2013
Now basically just showing usability upgrades in Dust 514. Faster matchmaking, better UI, etc.
— Steven Strom (@stevenstrom) April 25, 2013
Before and after images of graphical improvements to Dust 514. Definitely an improvement.
— Steven Strom (@stevenstrom) April 25, 2013
I want whatever music they’re playing during this EVE stream in Hotline Miami 2.
— Steven Strom (@stevenstrom) April 25, 2013
Lead designer is coming out to talk about the shared universe vision for EVE and Dust.
— Steven Strom (@stevenstrom) April 25, 2013
Dust’s lead designer looks like The Dream Lord from Doctor Who.
— Steven Strom (@stevenstrom) April 25, 2013
Lots of developer jargon right now…
— Steven Strom (@stevenstrom) April 25, 2013
Talking about EVE history. Moving on to server talk. *sigh*
— Steven Strom (@stevenstrom) April 25, 2013
I’m not even sure what’s going on anymore. There’s a power point of pencil drawn sandcastles.
— Steven Strom (@stevenstrom) April 25, 2013
Some kind of vague reference to a possible third EVE product. Possibly that Dust 514 app?
— Steven Strom (@stevenstrom) April 25, 2013
Basically, a lot of things were said to get to the point that EVE/Dust are worlds within a world within the real world. Okay.
— Steven Strom (@stevenstrom) April 25, 2013
Dust 514 now has a simplified version of the EVE Online star map.
— Steven Strom (@stevenstrom) April 25, 2013
Not nearly as pretty as the EVE Online version, but infinitely more readable.
— Steven Strom (@stevenstrom) April 25, 2013
Planets within systems within constellations within regions. Yup. This is an EVE map.
— Steven Strom (@stevenstrom) April 25, 2013
If the shooting Dust 514 handles better than it used to, I could see myself losing a lot of time to it. It’s gotten VERY complex.
— Steven Strom (@stevenstrom) April 25, 2013
No talk of PS4 support so far, which seems kind of surprising considering backwards compatibility issues could kill this game.
— Steven Strom (@stevenstrom) April 25, 2013
Speaker is talking about a player who started a war in EVE because someone stole his socks at an EVE meet-up.
— Steven Strom (@stevenstrom) April 25, 2013
Correction: The EVE players stole his SHOES. Not his socks.
— Steven Strom (@stevenstrom) April 25, 2013
Live EVE Online/Dust 514 battle onscreen now.
— Steven Strom (@stevenstrom) April 25, 2013
“Gang hacking” (multiple people hacking the same object) is my new favorite EVE Online terminology.
— Steven Strom (@stevenstrom) April 25, 2013
Orbital strike.
— Steven Strom (@stevenstrom) April 25, 2013
While in Dust 514, you can now see the name and ship-type of the person shooting you from orbit in EVE Online.
— Steven Strom (@stevenstrom) April 25, 2013
CCP now promising they will make fewer insane promises and just focus on making the game better, much to my relief.
— Steven Strom (@stevenstrom) April 25, 2013
And now we’re back to talking about Dust 514 branding.
— Steven Strom (@stevenstrom) April 25, 2013
Just showed a neat preview of CG Dust 514 TV advert. Soldiers made of dust fighting each other.
— Steven Strom (@stevenstrom) April 25, 2013
CCP dev just gave a pretty succinct outline of what it’s like to lose your whole life to EVE Online.
— Steven Strom (@stevenstrom) April 25, 2013
And that’s it for the Dust 514 talk. No “big surprises,” but as someone familiar with CCP promises, that’s a good thing.
— Steven Strom (@stevenstrom) April 25, 2013
Seems like they’re really doubling down and just making sure everything works as efficiently and beautifully as possible.
