Edge of Twilight Might Actually Come Out

Go ahead and slip this one under the “absolutely shocking” category. Edge of Twilight, that game from Fuzzyeyes announced way back in 2008, is scheduled for a summer 2013 release.

The game had previously been put in stasis due to development issues but was long missing, presumed dead after the developer laid off half its staff in 2009. The promising looking little title is slated for 360 and PS3, though it was originally announced for PC as well.

If you’re wondering why you should care about Edge of Twilight,  just about everyone that actually played it has compared it to Soul Reaver. That’s a pretty damn good reason.

Ouya, Baby!

After much fevered anticipation, Ouya developer consoles are finally shipping to Those Who Make Games.

To celebrate, Those Who Make Ouyas have released an unboxing video showing off exactly what developers can expect in their care packages. They also make it absolutely clear that this is to the final product that will eventually be available to the public, and there are still some bugs to be worked out.

That Playstation is Dead, Long Live the Playstation

pink playstation 2

Somehow, I always expected that the Playstation 2 would just continue selling forever. After all, it’s dirt cheap and boasts the best library of games in history (excluding the PC, of course). And unless your like me and still desperately cling to your original 60GB Playstation 3, it’s not like anything else can make use of said library.

That dream is not to be, however, as Famitsu is reporting that PS2s have ceased shipping in Japan. You can still buy whatever’s on store shelves (provided you live in Japan, I suppose) but that’s it.

This is the beginning of the end of the PS2’s 13 year legacy. If you need me, I’ll be in the corner clutching my copy of Persona 3 FES.

Steven’s Game of the Week

I’ve been playing a whole lot of games this month, as you can imagine. However, the one that’s really been desperately trying to tear my attention from my holiday backlog is Endless Space.

Endless Space is an indie, 4X strategy space sim that cropped up earlier this year, but it’s only now begun to get its hooks in me.

As far as 4X titles go, this one is surprisingly simple. If you’ve ever played Civilization or Sins of a Solar Empire, you’ll be right at home here. You pick a race, send out colony ships to absorb planets into your collective and pit fleets of starships against all of the other species that are trying to do the same. Along the way you’ll research a tech tree or four, enter into diplomatic negotiations and just generally strategize it up.

What’s really unique about Endless Space is its sense of personality. The game is unexpectedly funny at times, and each race feels quite unique. It also does a fair job of eschewing sci-fi game tropes. Remember the last time you played a game as a race of sentient amoebas? Exactly.

Shame about that combat, though.
