Going in to today, we were warned ahead of time that the focus of Microsoft’s Xbox going forward would be more than just gaming. We’ve already shown you what SmartGlass can do on its own, and coupled with some new applications the functions of the once-gray-now-matte-black box that sits on your entertainment center have been greatly increased.
Microsoft detailed several new uses and applications for the Xbox 360, from sports and fitness to television and music.
Xbox Music is the new name for the rebranded Zune music store, and will be available on Xbox 360, Windows 8, and Windows phones and tablets. The service now has over 30 millions music tracks. It includes a smart DJ, personalized lists, and sharing playlists with friends.
Also announced were the addition of more sports-based apps: content from ESPN2, ESPN 3, and ESPN U is coming to Xbox, as well as NHL Gamecenter Live and NBA Gametime.
A long-rumored native fitness app, Nike is bringing “Nike + Kinect Training” to the Xbox this Fall. The software does full personalization of workout habits, helping schedule programs and sending notifications to the user when they are nearing a scheduled workout time. The software also includes a personal trainer to keep users on track.
