It’s been a feast of finales over the last few weeks. The glut of shows that kept us company while we waited for the summer weather to roll in have, for the most part, ended another season and made room for the summer lineups to take their spots on the airwaves. Some of them gave us some closure, while most of them opened up more questions to pick up on next year. At least one of them was sort of a train wreck the entire way through, ended on a ridiculous cliffhanger, and got cancelled.
I’m not too worried about that one.
How I Met Your Mother finally answered the question everybody probably guessed, and nobody really cared about the answer to, namely, “Who did Barney get married to?” I might have missed something, but I’m pretty sure we’re seven seasons in and still have no idea who the titular character of this show is. 30 Rock and Community both ended, and while people have been saying 30 Rock is getting tired for a while now there’s a lot of furor over the release of Dan Harmon from his duties as show-runner on Community – which could mean for a lackluster return leading to an ultimate cancellation.
In longer shows, Supernatural reached the end of another season and, in true Supernatural fashion, continued its sprint through the realms of ridiculousness. The next season will find Dean and Castiel trapped in Purgatory, which means we get to kick back and hopefully watch a massive battle royal between them and every kind of monster ever introduced on the show.
Castle ended with Beckett and the titular character finally hooking up, and honestly, could have been the last episode. There are plenty of shows that end on a huge cliffhanger or with multiple plot threads left unfinished, so why not end it here? It has been renewed for another season, though, so maybe it can tie things up nicely. Also, there’s never a reason to not have more Fillion in your life.
Fringe is done for the season, and when it returns for its own fifth season it’s already confirmed to be the last for the series. That means two very important things: they know exactly when their show is done, and they know exactly how they want to finish it off. Season five is gonna be one hell of a ride.
Missing managed to stumble across the finish line, like a drunken baby learning to walk. Complete with (mostly) poor acting, a badly snatched and expanded plot from Taken, and an ending that loops back on the series as a whole like a snake eating its own tail it’s obvious why this got canned. Honestly, it’s for the best.
Nikita ended with the main antagonist dead and the good guys in charge of the big, bad organization. No real surprises, but it doesn’t seem like there’s anywhere else to go. The show has been renewed for a full third season, so I’m sure we’ll see lots of attempting to tie up loose ends and perhaps some new plot that threatens the world, but I think this is a show that isn’t gonna see much interest in the future.
I’m still not sure where I fall with Once Upon a Time. It’s just so middle-of-the-road that I don’t exactly hate it, but I really don’t like it either. I find a lot of it to be the exact wrong mixture of wooden acting and scene-chewing wrapped in an interpretation of a story that’s quickly running out of novelty factor. Hopefully the second season can kick the show into high gear.
Person of Interest, though, has turned into one hell of a show. This is a show that started out making me feel like it was another attempt at catching the same mainstream appeal as Lost and quickly turned into the same kind of action packed viewing adventure I’ve been wanting since Human Target got dropped. It’s a show that introduced an antagonist and then dealt with him in the same season, and went on to cover other shit, ending with introducing a way cooler antagonist. Of everything on this list I think this is the show I’m most looking forward to coming back.
Writer’s Note: Updates have been sporadic recently, due to a multitude of factors. But the new summer lineup is ramping up over the next few weeks, so you can expect a return to regular updates very, very soon.
