Classic adventure game fans have more and more reasons to get excited. From the now in-progress Double Fine Adventure to the Leisure Suit Larry remake, Kickstarter has been pretty good to the point-and-click adventurers.
As you probably know, many of the SideQuesting crew have a particular fondness for the Space Quest series. Heck, I even did a pretty in-depth two part podcast about the games a few years back. Well there is some pretty amazing news for us old time SQ fans; Mark Crowe and Scott Murphy, aka The Two Guys from Andromeda, have reunited to bring the world a brand-new “Spaceventure”.
After a brief 20+ year hiatus, the guys have gotten the band back together and are ready to pick up right where they left off… more or less. While they do own the personas of the Two Guys, they do no have the Space Quest license itself. While this means the new game will not star Roger Wilco, it will be a science fiction comedy in the same vein as the SQ games.
What Sets It Apart
Unlike any other genre, adventure games live or die by their story and characters. While some of us may still find it fun to use a chicken with a pulley in the middle to traverse an otherwise uncrossable gap in the environment, or make a mustache out of cat hair so you match a fake ID (OK, bad example), what really pulls you into an adventure game are interesting chracters, unique and original environments, and an enjoyable plot. It helps when it is punctuated with some good gags.
The Two Guys from Andromeda brought about some of the weirdest environments, the goofiest characters, and most fun dialog. As part of the era when adventure games killed you around every corner, the Two Guys made even their death sequences a joy with some witty narration to go along with your gruesome demises (and there were a lot of them). As a huge fan of science fiction, comedies, and the combination of the two in such things as Red Dwarf and The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, I always felt right at home in the bizarre universe the Two Guys created for the masses to roam.
Why You Should Donate
Scott and Mark have made it very clear that they are committed to this project. Not only are there already two prototype versions that backers can play around with, but they have been updating the Kickstarter page almost daily. They are doing regular podcasting, posting concept art, and even more importantly, getting some great feedback from the community of backers that has sprung up.
They have also lined up some amazing voice talent. Just check out this list:
- Gary Owens – Narrator in Space Quest IV and Space Quest VI. He was also the voice of Space Ghost.
- Rob Paulsen – Pinky (Pinky and the Brain), Yakko (Animaniacs), Raphael (TMNT), and multiple Monkey Island characters.
- Robert Clotworthy – Jim Raynor (Starcraft 1 & 2), multiple voices in Star Wars: The Old Republic
- Ellen McLain – GLaDOS (Portal 1 & 2), Overwatch (Half-Life 2), multiple other voices from other Valve games (and more)
- John Patrick Lowrie – Sniper (Team Fortress 2), Sword Control (Halo Reach)
The guy are trying to raise $500,000 to bring their latest creation to life. They are offering up some pretty amazing rewards at a huge variety of pledge levels. Currently, they are stuck just over $270k, and we are pretty passionate about helping spread the word so that they can reach their goal.
As you have seen, we don’t bring up every single Kickstarter project we come across here on SideQuesting. We know there are a lot of them running all the time these days and many people are suffering from Kickstarter Fatigue, but when we believe this strongly in a project, it is our duty as gamers to make sure you are aware of it.
