[box_light]Every once in a while, we here at SideQuesting like to put the spotlight on those artists and entrepreneurs on the fringe of the video game industry. Be they musicians, artists, businesspeople or even just indie developers, Merch Madness is here to tell their story and bring it to you, via written words and podcast specials.[/box_light]
Music has a tendency to be a tragically underappreciated element of game design. The perfect score swelling at just the right moment can immortalize a boss fight, heighten a chase scene or punctuate a moment of tragedy. It’s no wonder then that so many games have such great music. And that great music can inspire great talent. Case in point Jesse “Main Finger” Gregory.
A master of electronic rhythm, Jesse as his alter ego Main Finger brings the sort of sweet, sweet noise that we hear at SideQuesting adore.
Jesse’s songs evoke all of the rhythm and flow of his favorite genre stalwarts like Daft Punk and The Crystal Method while keeping a distinctly video game tone. By twisting and remixing classic tunes from games like Mega Man, Metroid and Zelda, Gregory is able to combine his two loves into great, new music while paying respect to the source material. These tracks truly must be heard to be believed.
Luckily, many of his jams can be found on the Main Finger website. And while you’re enjoying his eclectic collection of electric elation, take a minute to check out his blog which provides up-to-the-whenever-he-feels-like-it coverage of new Main Finger projects. For instance, Back in Blue, a tribute to Mega Man 9 featuring Jesse Gregory which can be found here.
But why listen to me talking about Jesse when you can hear for yourself? Be sure to listen to the podcast embedded at the top of the post to hear my rambling interview of the man himself. And when you’re done, feel free to check out his entries in The Wily Castle Remix Gauntlet 2011 and show the man and his team some support! You can start by listening to his very latest entry and most recent remix here.
Of course, we all already know who our favorite competitor is, but you can listen to the stuff from the other entrants as well. Just make sure you know where your true loyalties lie.
Oh, and as promised, below is the Silent Hill: Shattered Memories remix that Jesse was kind enough to provide. Enjoy!
