The Morning Roast: Netflix? Netflix!

The Morning Roast: Netflix? Netflix!

It’s Summer!  Yes, we still drink hot coffee in the morning, even in blistering 100-degree heat.  It’s a tradition, regardless of season.

Another thing about Summer: You don’t usually expect so much damn gaming news to break.

The big stories include Netflix on the 3DS, Popcap purchased, and Forza 4 turning us into criminals.

Netflix arrives on the Nintendo 3DS

Netflix on the Nintendo 3DS

Guys, you’re crying about $7.99 for Netflix DVDs?  Really?  That copy of “the Break Up” that’s been stuck in the red envelope on your coffee table for the last 8 months says “hello”.  For the rest of us, the $7.99 streaming is a bargain. We use Redbox, anyways.

When Nintendo first announced that Netflix was coming to the 3DS, we all thought it was a good idea.  Today that dream becomes a reality.  Want to take a break from the Master Quest in 3D, or from winning hats for your Miis? Fire up Netflix.  The service currently only streams 2D, but Nintendo’s press releases mentions that 3D videos will be on the way as well. Also cool: the 3D menus.

Our man J.J. Holder gave it a shot and noted less-than-spectacular visuals, culminating in a foggy, muddy look.  We haven’t tried it for ourselves yet to see if we have the same issues.

EA buys Popcap Games, Zynga shrugs

EA Games buys Popcap Games

It was going to happen eventually, so it was more a matter of “who” and not “when”.  Electronic Arts has picked up the tab and purchased PopCap Games.  The price tag: a cool $650 Million in cash and another $100 Million in stock.  It’s a pretty smart move, if you ask me. PopCap is the darling of the smaller publishers, touching every platform out there and being super-profitable on each one. EA just started Origin and is looking for some great digital content that it can horde all to itself to sell the service.

Smart business is smart.

Nintendo realizes that remaking classic games in 3D is actually hard

We all want to see Legend of Zelda come home as a 3D Classic.  We would all gobble up Punch-Out in 3D, and make time even for the original Dragon Warrior Quest to be re-done.  But, hey, it’s all just wishful thinking right now.  After pumping out Excitebike in the US, and Xevious and Urban Champion in Japan, Nintendo’s realized that there’s actually a bit of elbow grease needed to remake a classic game and keep it enjoyable.

Speaking in the latest Iwata Asks series Nintendo’s developers note that it takes familiarity not just with a game, but with what made a game great to recreate it in 3D.

I still want Zelda, regardless.  Get to work, Nintendo!

New Forza 4 trailer shows us super super super cars

Forza 4 is going to be great, if the visuals and cars included are any kind of telltale. And now, as Turn 10 release their latest trailer, it makes us ponder just a couple things.

1) We’ll never be able to afford a Bugatti Veyron.

2) I’m going to do every fucking thing in my power to steal a Bugatti Veyron.
