We knew that we’d see more casual Kinect games revealed by Microsoft, and now we know more information about one of the more intriguing ones. Kinect Fun Labs is a game straight out of Mr Wizard’s personal bakery, allowing the players to create several fun little experiments with the app. And, it’s an app, not a game. KFL is little more than a collection of possibilities, meant to showcase the promises that we saw from Kinect nearly two years ago.
Finger-tracking, the ability for Kinect to see minute points in space, is used as the backbone for an art program that let’s users “paint” in virtual space, around and behind them, with color and light. Object-scanning is the big feature that many were looking forward to two years ago, which allows for the scanning on actual objects to be used in the virtual world. The demo showed the scanning-in of a stuffed monster toy, and then playing with that toy as an on-screen character. This is where we’ll ultimately be able to scan in Tony Hawk’s skateboard. Finally, the app also allows for the digitization of objects and clothing that can be brought onto the character’s Avatar (or in games). The demo on stage showed one user scanning in her shirt and jeans, and then mapping them onto her Avatar.
The kicker? Kinect Fun Labs is available today. On Xbox Live. FOR FREE.
