It’s been quite a day for hardcore gamers, with the reveals that several popular franchises were making comebacks soon. The news was so good, in fact, that I popped open a bottle of beer and chugged along. As I sat back and typed up some notes, it suddenly dawned on me: why don’t I make a feature of pairing the news with beer each week? I like a good brew once in a while, and certain news posts actually seem to digest better with a beverage.
It’s mid-May, and the Spring beers have been in full effect. The season calls for a good IPA, and since the news looks towards games and products in the future, as well as some big rumors, it takes something a bit stronger to keep our interest until then. I present the brew of the week: Dogfish Head’s Squall IPA. It has a strong aroma to it, designed to take the “masculine feel of the Eastern Seaboard” of the US. With today’s news, it’s all about manliness. And, well, leaks too.
We’re bringing you some possible Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 leaks, the Nintendo 3DS eShop launch line-up (we think), new Soulcalibur gaming, and a Tetris movie that might put King of Kong on notice.
RUMOR: Is this the Modern Warfare 3 box art?
Kotaku is reporting to have been sent along the logo and box art for Modern Warfare 3, found floating on the web (it’s since been pulled on the original site). The big issue I’m seeing is a reversal of what developer Infinity Ward and publisher Activision created with MW2; namely, the Modern Warfare 2 title would be bigger than Call of Duty. At one point, in fact, “Call of Duty” was removed completely from Modern Warfare 2‘s box art, but subsequently brought back. In the case of what we’re seeing here, it looks as if A) with Infinity Ward now on par with (or maybe even second tier to) Treyarch, the Call of Duty brand will remain the top dog, or B) it’s a fanboy Photoshop. We’ll find out soon, though, as the signs are pointing to Activision revealing the next Call of Duty perhaps even before E3.

RUMOR: Nintendo’s 3DS eShop to launch with Zelda, Mario?
I’ve never heard of The Magic Box, but apparently they’ve been cultivating international gaming news for a while now. News broke from them a couple of days ago that Famitsu is revealing the 3DS’s eShop launch software for Japan. The Famitsu article alleges that the eShop will indeed launch this month (in Japan) and come with a smattering of Game Boy, Game Gear, and 3D Classic games. The games include 3D remakes of the original Legend of Zelda, Excitebike, and Xevious, with Sonic & Tails 2 (Game Gear) and the Gameboy Color version of Super Mario Land launching in the Virtual console shop, among other games. The launch will also include a 3D video player and a trailer/preview channel for 3DS games.
Again: all of this is for Japan, and again: none of this is actually confirmed by Nintendo. Take it was a grain of table salt.
[UPDATE: A note on Nintendo’s website has now pushed back the May update to the evening of June 6th, which is the day before Nintendo hosts their press event at E3. They’ve only listed the Internet browser and the eShop, without specific content details.]

Soulcalibur V Confirmed!

I’m a fan of the Soulcalibur series, dating back to the arcade games. My favorite moment was undoubtedly the unfair advantage that Link had in the Gamecube version of Soulcalibur II. Well, Namco Bandai has officially taken the wraps off of the latest game in the series, which is marked for a 2012 release date for home consoles.

Ecstasy of Order: The Tetris Masters Documentary Coming Soon
You may not have heard of the film yet, but from the initial trailer teaser it looks to potentially usurp King of Kong as one of the best gaming documentaries ever made. The movie follows a group of Tetris masters, revealing over twenty years of the game’s competitive history, on their trek to the Classic Tetris World Championship. Will Tetris whiz and Nintendo World Champion Thor Ackerland show up? You’ll be able to find out once the film finishes production. Donate to the cause here: http://ecstasyoforder.com/

Lady Gaga Launching GagaVille on Facebook
Team Sidequesting knows that I’m a Lady Gaga fan, and I don’t try to hide it. The crazy, egg-condom girl can sing! She can also form some pretty strategic partnerships, too, as she’s signed up with Zynga to make some specialized FarmVille content, called GagaVille. The in-game location will be a place to listen to the Ga’s upcoming album, Born This Way, and interact with other fans and haterzzzz. It launches May 17th.

So, how’s the IPA holding up? Still have a few drops left? Chug away, as it’s a long month until E3 and you’ll have plenty more opportunities to grab more brews until then.
